The least reactive of the halogens, Iodine ([Kr]4d105s25p5) (CAS 7553-56-2) is a bluish-black, diatomic, lustrous solid, volatilizing at room temperature into a blue-violet gas with a distinctive odor. Iodine exhibits some metal-like properties. It is used in a wide variety of applications including dyes, photography, and medicines. It combines with many elements to form a variety of compounds.
