Calcium (Ca)

Calcium (Ca)

The metallic element calcium ([Ar]4s2) (CAS 7440-70-2) has a silvery color and is harder than sodium, but softer than aluminum. The pure element is never found in nature uncombined, rather, it commonly occurs as limestone (CaCO3), gypsum (CaSO4H2) and fluorite (CaF2). Calcium, one of the alkaline earth elements, reacts in air to form a white coating of nitride and reacts with water, alcohol and dilute acids with evolution of hydrogen. Calcium is the fifth most abundant element in the earth's crust.
