Inhibits the metabolism of folic acid

This Thermo Scientific Chemicals brand product was originally part of the Alfa Aesar product portfolio. Some documentation and label information may refer to the legacy brand. The original Alfa Aesar product / item code or SKU reference has not changed as a part of the brand transition to Thermo Scientific Chemicals.

General Description

• Methotrexate disodium salt is an organic sodium salt derived from methotrexate with antineoplastic, antirheumatic, dermatologic, and immunosuppressive activities

• It acts as an enzyme inhibitor of dihydrofolate reductase

• It binds to and inhibits purine nucleotide and thymidylate synthesis, leading to the inhibition of DNA and RNA synthesis. Because of this mechanism of action, the methotrexate disodium salt is defined as a nucleic acid synthesis inhibitor

Application

• Methotrexate disodium salt is a folic acid antagonist with the ability to inhibit folic acid metabolism

• In vitro studies demonstrated that methotrexate disodium salt has potent activity against pyrimethamine-resistant Plasmodium vivax malaria parasites

• This compound has been used in chimeric polymersomes in order to investigate its effect in lung tumor xenografts in mice
